Brieden Orthodontics aims to make every orthodontic journey smooth and pain-free. Our orthodontist in New Baltimore, MI understands that orthodontics may not be the most exciting thing to go through and at times it may be a little uncomfortable. However, we are here to help you through this time period, make the most of your care, and create a beautiful, bright smile once you’ve completed the journey. This includes wearing a palatal expander prior to the active orthodontics stage for some patients.

Alleviating the Discomfort of Your Palatal Expander

During the first few days wearing your palatal expander and after it has been tightened, you may experience some discomfort. The good news is our New Baltimore family orthodontist has some great tips to deal with the discomfort and alleviate any pain you may experience. Follow our tips and you’ll be one step closer to a beautiful, straight smile!

Alleviating the Discomfort of Your Palatal Expander
  • Eat Soft Foods: Throughout your palatal expander treatment, it is normally more comfortable to eat soft foods. Brieden Orthodontics recommends consuming foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, soups, soft vegetables, and smoothies.
  • Keep a Napkin on Hand: One of the side effects of a palatal expander is increased saliva production which may result in drooling or excess spit. Our family orthodontist suggests keeping a napkin or tissue on hand to alleviate any extra saliva that you may experience.
  • Over Counter Painkillers: If you do experience any pain with your palatal expander, you can take over-the-counter pain medication like Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or Aleve to alleviate this discomfort. Remember to follow the instructions on the bottle and only take the recommended dose for your age/weight/height.
  • Apply an Ice Pack: Initially, you may experience some inflammation, especially in your cheeks. If this occurs, you can reduce the swelling with an ice pack or a cold beverage. Enjoy an ice cream or smoothie to help alleviate any inflammation or pain.
  • Oral Hygiene: While undergoing any orthodontic care it is essential that you keep up with your oral hygiene routine. This includes brushing twice per day and flossing once per day to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
