Jaw surgery at your New Baltimore orthodontist office

Jaw surgery provides a line of defense against a long list of ailments, including TMJ, sleep apnea, facial trauma, mouth breathing, an unbalanced facial appearance, and more.

So you’re having surgery? What should you expect:

Jaw surgery will take place in our office under anesthesia. Once you have been released and are healed, you will enjoy living in a new way, with increased facial function and an enhanced appearance. Healing from jaw surgery can take some time, but there are many ways to speed up the process and make it much easier on yourself.

Pain reducers are your friend

- Use over-the-counter pain medication like Acetaminophen, or prescription pain medication if provided, to stay on top of the pain.

- You can also use a warm compress or ice pack against the area.

Start with soft foods…

If you’ve ever wanted an excuse to live on mashed potatoes, now you have it. Directly following surgery, some patient’s minds find a liquid diet to be the most sustainable, so choose items like:

- Smoothies

- Meal replacement shakes

- Broth

Once you begin to feel comfortable chewing, soft foods like the aforementioned mashed potatoes, yogurt, applesauce, or scrambled eggs will be much easier to consume during the healing process.

…But don’t keep them soft forever

Though you will initially prefer soft, easily chewed foods, don’t remain so cautious that your soft food diet lasts too long. Mild chewing will help strengthen your jaw strength and encourage faster healing.

Get some rest

Give yourself the proper healing time. Now is the time to sit back, relax and catch up on your favorite TV show or read that great book you’ve been dying to read.

Keep up on hygiene

It’s important to maintain your oral hygiene, even when it doesn’t sound fun to do. Use a soft bristle brush and be gentle, keeping the brush directly on the teeth.

Follow Instructions

After your surgery, you will be sent home with a list of instructions from Brieden Orthodontics. Be sure to read them carefully, follow the advice given and be sure to contact our office immediately if something doesn’t feel right.

Jaw surgery can be life-changing surgery for many. If you have been considering making that jump, we hope these recovery tips have helped in easing your concerns. Contact Brieden Orthodontics today to schedule a consultation.
