Braces are an exciting part of your journey to a healthier smile, but we understand it can sometimes make it frustrating to brush your teeth while making sure to hit all the necessary spots. As your dedicated provider of orthodontic treatment, such as clear, lingual, and metal braces, East China’s Brieden Orthodontics is here to offer some tips to help you out. Read on to learn more, and feel free to contact one of our office locations if you have any questions!

Rinse First

Before brushing, rinsing with water will help break up and wash away any loose food particles. Just swish with water for a few moments before spitting. Repeat this as many times as you feel is necessary.

Cover Your Angles

One of the most important things to note about brushing with braces is how important it is to attack from all angles. Start with brushing at your gum line at a slight angle and once you have finished that, brush each bracket top and bottom. Finally, be sure you have brushed each tooth both above and below every bracket, covering all tooth surfaces.

Use Tools to Assist

Having the right tools will go a long way in making sure you’re properly brushing throughout your orthodontic treatment. Try to find a toothbrush designed specifically with braces in mind, and utilize tools like water flossers, interdental brushes, and floss threaders to make sure you are cleaning all the spaces between your teeth as well.

If you have questions about any of these tools or need help finding them, talk to your orthodontist in New Baltimore, MI at Brieden Orthodontics.

Have a Routine

Establishing an oral hygiene routine is one of the best ways to ensure your teeth are being properly cared for during your braces treatment. While wearing braces, it’s ideal for patients to brush each morning, following every meal, and once again before bed. Remembering to brush after each meal will keep food particles from sticking around throughout the day, giving bacteria less of a chance to build up.
