Understanding Invisalign: How Does It Work?

Understanding Invisalign: How Does It Work?

There are a lot of options to choose from when it comes to braces. Depending on what you’re looking for and what lifestyle you live, Invisalign could be a great option for you! However, you may be wondering how Invisalign works, and what are the steps to be aware of before and after you start your treatment. At Brieden Orthodontics, we offer customized treatments to everyone who walks through our doors. If you are interested in receiving Invisalign, here are the steps of how the treatment works.

First Step: Consultation

The first step of starting any orthodontic treatment is to get a consultation with your orthodontist. Your orthodontist will be able to tell if you qualify for the treatment. Invisalign can treat overbites, crowded teeth, gapped teeth, and other mild malocclusions. For some, Invisalign might not work as effectively as traditional braces. The biggest determinant of whether or not Invisalign is right for you is what you want to be fixed and how severe your case is. Invisalign is geared towards moderate cases, and might not be effective at fixing severe issues.

Second Step: Records

The second step is to take records. This includes taking x-rays, photos, and taking a 3-D digital scan of your teeth. Once the records are taken, they are sent to Invisalign with detailed instructions from your orthodontist on how they want to straighten your teeth. Once the review is complete, we approve for Invisalign to create your custom-made clear aligners, also called trays. It takes about 4-5 weeks from impressions to aligners arrive. Once our office receives the trays, we’re ready to start treatment!

Third Step: Treatment

Each Invisalign tray is worn 1-2 weeks at a time. The aligners put pressure on your teeth and gums, and your teeth will begin to shift gradually at a slow rate. You’ll receive a box of about 20-50 trays that you will keep at home. Each tray is different, so when you put in a new one, the tray itself is slightly straighter than the one before. Your teeth will continue to move week by week and eventually, your teeth will be straightened into their final positions at the end of treatment. Depending on the severity of your case, treatment can last about 12-18 months (or more). You’ll need to visit your orthodontist once every 6-10 weeks (which is less time than you would if you had traditional braces).

Fourth Step: Considerations

Once you get your Invisalign trays, you’ll be expected to wear them all day, except for eating/drinking and brushing/flossing. Wearing your aligners for this amount of time will help the teeth move to their final position for that particular tray. If your teeth aren’t in their anticipated position when you move on to the next set of aligners, the aligners won’t fit quite as well, delaying your progress. Once you're done with your treatment, your orthodontist will give you retainers to wear to keep your teeth straight.
