As your choice for an orthodontist in New Baltimore & East China, MI, Dr. Christopher M. Brieden and our staff here at Brieden Orthodontics want to give you the best orthodontic experience possible. We understand that each patient will have his or her own unique orthodontic needs and desires, which is why we strive to provide such a wide array of efficient braces and other orthodontic treatments. One of these great treatments that we offer for our patients is ceramic braces.

WHAT ARE CERAMIC BRACES?

Ceramic braces (also known as clear braces) are essentially just like metal braces, only they have one clear difference – the brackets are made out of a translucent, ceramic material. This will allow a patient’s orthodontic treatment to be more discreet as the brackets will be much less noticeable than those of metal braces. Other than that, ceramic braces operate in basically the same way; you’ll end up reaching the same successful outcome with this treatment, though you’ll look so much better while you’re undergoing orthodontics!

As clear braces are just like metal braces, they follow the exact same method of being applied onto a patient’s teeth. First, your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned and then dried. After your teeth are dry, the brackets of the braces will be glued (or cemented) onto your teeth. When the brackets are applied, the wires will be inserted into the slots on the brackets and they’ll then be secured with elastic ligatures.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR CERAMIC BRACES

If you want a successful orthodontic treatment that’s as hassle-free as possible, you’ll need to take good care of your ceramic braces. Some of our top recommendations for taking care of them include the following:

  • Brush and Floss Regularly: The most important thing to remember is to brush and floss your teeth every day. While a person should typically brush twice per day, we recommend brushing four times per day (once after every meal and then again before going to bed) if you have clear braces. The reason why you should brush more often is because braces contain many crevices where food particles and bacteria can get trapped, which can cause tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral problems. Keeping your teeth and braces clean will help make sure that your orthodontic treatment is completed without any problems.
  • Avoid Harmful Foods: When you’re wearing ceramic braces, you should know that there are many different foods you should avoid as they can harm your braces. These include hard foods (which can break the wires and brackets of your braces) and sticky foods (which can get stuck in the wires and brackets and tug on them, sometimes loosening them). Make sure to avoid these two types of foods while you’re wearing braces.
  • Visit Both Your Orthodontist and Dentist: During your treatment with ceramic braces, you’ll obviously have to regularly visit your orthodontist to make sure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Not only will you have to see your orthodontist though, but you’ll need to keep up with your visits to the dentist as well. Your dentist will be able to tell if you have any underlying dental problems that could potentially complicate an otherwise routine orthodontic treatment.
